Where to Find GLBT Alaska - Annual Events, Revised

Update - Please see the most recent version of this list: Where to Find GLBT Alaska - Annual Events, Revised Again

by E. Ross

Previously, I posted the first part of a series on GLBT Alaskan Resources: Where to Find GLBT Alaska - Annual Events. I asked for feedback to update the list and received several messages about two changes: The Pride Conference was not held at UAA last year, and the Picnic may no longer be held in Eklutna.

Here is the revised list of main annual events for GLBT Alaska, in seasonal order:
  • Arctic Heat (Jan.) - TLFMC comes out of hibernation to choose the next Bear and Leather titleholders.
  • Celebration of Change (April) - RAW's 'break-up' performance celebrates women, art, music and springtime.
  • Day of Silence & Prom (April) - GLSEN's Day of Silence and same-sex prom graduates teens in style.
  • PrideFest (June) - Identity's summer solstice Pride Parade and Festival displays our Pride downtown.
  • Coronation (August) - ICOAA's late summer extravaganza invests the new Imperial Court.
  • Pride Picnic (Memorial Day) - The Picnic and BBQ celebrate unity and the end of summer.
  • Pride Conference (October) - Identity's back-to-school conference is inspired by National Coming Out Day.
The list is still focused on Anchorage. What are the main annual events for Fairbanks and Juneau? Please email or leave a comment below, and help to make a complete resource list for GLBT Alaska. Not sure how to comment? Read 5 Easy Ways to Enjoy This Blog.

The Imperial Court of ALL Alaska and The College of Emperors and Empresses Present: The Memorial Day Picnic. The location is changed this year as the Eklutna picnic grounds are no longer available. More information will be forthcoming.
I would think that since the picnic is on Memorial Day, that it should be tagged as the "Beginning" of summer and not the end, thereof.

You are so right! I saw it listed as the Memorial Day Picnic, but remembered going to it on Labor Day for some reason, and got it all mixed up. Thank you for correcting me.

So, is it scheduled for Memorial Day (5/26) this year?

Update - Memorial Day Picnic, Monday 5/26, noon-5 p.m. The 40th Annual Big Gay Memorial Day Picnic has moved to Kincaid Park. No alcohol, no drugs, no nudity. Lots of food.

Memorial Day is on May 25, not May 26. Where is this being advertised? Google pulled up random pages before I found this blog. Attendance may be affected due to the short notice.

Hi J.J.

You're correct, the Picnic is always on Memorial Day, as it says in the post. Last year, that was May 26, 2008 (the previous comments are dated 2008.) This year, the holiday and Picnic are on Monday, May 25, 2009.

The first announcement for this year's Picnic was in Sunday's Gay AK post:

They're working on a flyer, and I'll post it with it's own headline when I get it. Here is last year's colorful flyer:

The picnic is also being advertised all month in the email newsletter Alaska GLBT News, which has almost 600 readers. To subscribe to the newsletter, send an email to Alaska GLBT News (the address is in the right hand column of the blog.)

Thanks for visiting Bent, and be sure to check out the recent posts for current happenings!
